Restoring the Caledonian Forest in the Highlands of Scotland with Alan Watson Featherstone

Live Event

Ended

By the late 20th century, deforestation had reduced the Caledonian Forest to about 2% of its original range, leaving it diminished geographically and ecologically. The Forest consisted of old trees nearing the end of their lives and was missing many of its native wildlife species and key ecological processes. This talk will focus on the practical, positive action that is facilitating the natural recovery of the forest, its species, and the soils upon which the ecosystem depends. It will also outline a set of Principles of Ecological Restoration that have been developed to guide the recovery process.

Agriculture of the Future with Ernst Götsch

Live Event

Ended

My experience and professional dedication to plant improvement through the genetic enhancement of plants brought me to the conclusion that it would be more efficient to focus solely on improving the growing conditions we offer to our crops, instead of focusing on, selecting for, and creating pest-resistant genotypes of highly-productive crop species. The main tool necessary for attaining vigor, health, and high productivity of our crops is our skill for an intelligent employment of the dynamics of species succession and the creation of agro-ecosystems.

Permaculture in India: Growing Soil and Diversifying Agriculture with Villagers in the Indian Drylands with Raya Grieb

Live Event

Ended

This talk will share the work of the Living Ecology internship program which aids the work of Aranya Agricultural Alternatives, an effective development organization in India. Students learned permaculture consultancy, as they worked with a village farmer in implementing a transformational and functional farm design. These farms provide crucial examples of alternatives to GMO monocropping and solutions to drought, dry wells, malnutrition, severe soil depletion, and farmer suicides. This talk will specifically highlight the methods of turning barren laterite rock, in a deforested landscape, into productive agricultural systems.
