Biologically Enhanced Agricultural Management [BEAM] with Dr. David Johnson
Dr. David Johnson will share with us the results of his research on soil microbial community structure and function. He will also outline the steps we can take to restore the diversity of microbial life in our soils through the Biologically Enhanced Agricultural Management (BEAM) approach. This is a simple and affordable approach that helps rebuild soil structure and fertility and improve productivity and profitability while also benefiting the environment and climate.

Dr. David JohnsonResearch Scientist, Sr. Molecular Biologist NMSUDr. David C. Johnson is a molecular biologist currently working with: California State University Chico, Arizona State University, Texas A&M, USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, and growers exploring paths to improve food security, reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations, and increase productivity and profitability through the development of beneficial soil microbial communities in farm and rangeland soils. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Regenerative Agricultural Initiative (RAI) at California State University, Chico and the Director of the Institute for Sustainable Agricultural Research at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.
David’s current research, in soil microbial community structure and function, has opened a window for viewing the interdependence between plants and soil microbes towards improving plant growth and soil fertility. Optimization of these plant-microbe associations promotes: improved soil fertility, faster growth of crops, improved plant water use efficiencies, and greater soil carbon storage capabilities. These benefits provide a path to significantly increase crop productivity and reduce greenhouse gases within a regenerative agricultural system.

Could you provide your guidance on how the hundreds of JS practitioners like myself should adjust to the provisional message from the Chico State U. that their 3 studies were unable to confirm the “inoculant effect” of applied fungal dominant compost?

The main problem with the global food system today is its inefficiency.
Dr. Joseph Pool from Oxford University published an extensive global food analysis in 2018 exposing the truth about animal agriculture. Despite dairy and meat providing just 18% of calories it uses 83% of farmland and is responsible for 60% of agriculture’s greenhouse gas emissions. He concluded that a plant-based food system would reduce global farmland by 75% which would free up vast areas of land for rewilding.
A plant-based kind and compassionate food system would not just help the environment by reducing CO2 emissions, science has also shown it can improve our health (by reducing the risk of chronic disease and illness), it can help address some of the starvation occurring in the world today. What we need is a more compassionate farming plant-based food system.
I’d like to inquire about any of the latest research on the impact of IMF/5G on soil microbial populations and any innovations in this area. Thank you 🙂
61.72 Gigatons of CO2 per year? And the proper management of cattle can help grow more food? I think more people need to know about this. The doesn’t seem to be a negative here unless you have investments in the fertilizer industry.

I have watched other webinars by David, and am really glad i didn’t pass this one!
This presentation really addresses the value for studying to correctly manage land with BEAM and the Soil Food Web approaches, as well as Adaptive Multi-paddock Grazing for larger scales such as rangelands and savannahs.
Incredibly detailed information which i have found amazingly useful in reinforcing the need to intensively practice the healing of landscapes and ecosystems ASAP.
